What Zodiac Sign Is King of Pentacles?
If you didn’t know this already, every Tarot card in the 78-card deck can be related to either a zodiac sign or a planet. For the rough, traditional, and secure King of Pentacles, there is only one zodiac sign that would make sense to represent it: Taurus, of course!
Zodiac Sign: Taurus
Let’s first get into exactly how this works. Pentacles represents all the earth signs: Capricorn, Taurus, and Virgo. “Kings” in Tarot represent all the fixed signs: Scorpio, Leo, Aquarius, and Taurus. So, put fixed earth together and you get the King of Pentacles!
Now, a little bit on how King of Pentacles aligns with Taurus. We asked Xavier Villanova, Tarot reader for Tarot By Maisy, to answer a few questions on why Taurus was selected to represent this Tarot card.
“The King of Pentacles represents a reliable, stable, wealthy, and steadfast ruler who has built his empire through sheer determination and hard work,” he says. Villanova goes on to say that these are all Taurus traits. “Those born under this earth sign dedicate their lives to achieve financial stability, luxuries, and unmovable foundations.”
In general, this card really embodies a Taureans need for security, finances, and the material luxuries that they find so comforting.
Meaning
Upright
An upright King of Pentacles can indicate a man or someone with masculine energy who is very much set in his ways. He enjoys having a routine. He likes knowing what’s to come. He likes having a handle on everything in his life such as career, money, and relationships. In essence, he enjoys having the power to control his own life and appreciates modern comforts and traditional values.
When discussing Taurus in this sense, an upright King of Pentacles would represent the more uplifting Taurus sentiments. For example, this person may have a wonderful taste regarding possessions, food, and luxury. This person is likely quite dominant and sensual; it would represent someone who “takes charge” in bed, for example. Additionally, some of the more positive Taurean qualities are patience and hard work—which are all things that the King of Pentacles owns.
Reversed
When upside down, this card can represent someone who takes “control” to the next level. Due to his immobility or fear of change, a reversed King of Pentacles person will make abrupt halts to any progress. He will diverge from those who challenge him. And this person may even become tyrannical in order to keep things as they are.
When discussing Taurus in this sense, a reversed King of Pentacles can represent the more negative qualities of Taurus. For example, stubbornness is huge with the reversed King of Pentacles. And because he is so afraid of change, this person may also be quite ill-tempered… using brute and might to get what he wants as opposed to navigating emotions or seeing things from a different perspective.
Finally, because Venus (planet of beauty) rules Taurus, a reversed King of Pentacles can represent someone who is very lavish—obsessively so. They may be quite materialistic and have trouble viewing things from the perspective of the heart.
