History of the World Card
The origin of this card lays in Christian teachings. In older Tarot decks, the World depicts the symbols of the four Evangelists: human, lion, ox, and eagle heads (as a tetramorph). In later decks, biblical symbolism may or may not be acknowledged. Instead, the signs of the zodiac are used to connect heaven and Earth: human (Aquarius/Air), lion (Leo/Fire), ox (Taurus/Earth), and eagle (Scorpio/Water)—all meant to represent the four elements. Whichever way it is presented, the overall message of completion is key.
